3. Stepping Out

Walk down eighteen stone steps:
Another world
from bustling Liverpool streets,
shadows bursting, fragments of silence
shattered in midday sun.

Through a tiny doorway to a dark dungeon,
ceiling arches over a dancefloor,
connected tunnels of reddish brick
drip with sweat;
Rickety wooden chairs,
shimmering under a few token lights,
where office workers, push against girls
squashed in short skirts with beehive hair,
gulp down a lunch of imagination.

A stage: few planks on supports.
Liverpool Boys in black T-shirts,
leather trousers and jackets
spun a universe,
a left hand bass player
and right hand rhythm,
come together for vocals,
guitars spread out like wings.

A cellarful of noise:
The Cavern in Matthew Street,
sweating storms explode,
buzz and hum with Rock and Roll.

Lightning flashes
breath out a magic
poured into bottles of youth.
Flared messages surf
from dark corners of the aquarium.

A fresh, innocent beat:
Rhythmic Revolutionaries,
step between shadows,
making their own beds:
Farmyards of Vision.
