2. Come Together
(The Quarrymen)
From Menlove Avenue,
climbing walls,
running across Strawberry Fields.
Teddy Boy artist
laughing through school,
holding a guitar:
the Gun of the working class,
melting out strings,
to a kite of Anger, fury and loneliness.
A saucepan of pain,
sometimes boiling over,
spilling at the edges,
walking with an Elvis sneer and swagger.
Tea chests broom handles,
laundry washboards,
Acoustic guitar and maybe drums.
Ducktail haricuts,
T-shirts and tight jeans,
in engineer boots.
Travelling the early days
on the One after 909,
writing songs, playing guitars,
facing each other: Mirrors
teaching songs and chords.
Connected waves of laughter
with fresh, acoustic lyrics,
bounce off silver fishes,
swimming up there.
Bubbles of possibilities bang,
shaking pillows with stretched out stories:
Golden fingers
In transparent gloves
directing traffic of a generation and more.
